The older streets around Flora and Merton run original clay sewer under mature gardens. Root intrusion here is constant rather than occasional, and relining is almost always cheaper than digging through established landscaping.
New townhouses and small blocks are being connected to sewer mains laid for single dwellings. We check the existing junction has the fall and capacity before connecting — the alternative is two properties sharing a line that was never sized for both.
West of the highway the land drops sharply toward the river. Properties down there often rely on pump wells rather than gravity, which changes both the failure mode and the urgency when something stops.

The step people miss is checking the existing junction can carry the extra load: connecting a second dwelling to a line sized for one is the most common cause of chronic blockages in newly subdivided Shire blocks.
