Plumber in Cronulla.
Sydney's only beach suburb on the rail line, and the only one where we carry marine-grade fittings as standard — everything within a few streets of the surf corrodes faster.
What we see in Cronulla.
Tanks, roof plumbing and external fittings on the peninsula fail years earlier than the same units inland. We check sacrificial anodes as routine here; on a Cronulla job it's usually the difference between a service call and a replacement.
The peninsula sits on deep sand rather than the sandstone that defines the rest of the Shire. Pipe joints settle and pull apart as the ground moves, which is why blockages here tend to recur at exactly the same point.
Short-stay apartments around Kingsway and the beachfront run at full occupancy over summer, when hot water systems and drains get several times their normal load. Most of our December callouts here are units that were fine in winter.

Asked in Cronulla.
Salt. Airborne salt corrodes the tank, the external pipework and the fittings from the outside in, and the closer you are to the beach the faster it happens. Two things help: choosing a unit rated for coastal installation rather than the cheapest on the shelf, and having the sacrificial anode checked every couple of years. The anode is a consumable rod designed to corrode instead of your tank — replacing it costs a fraction of a new system and routinely adds years.
