Houses cut into the hillside often sit below the street, which means pump systems rather than gravity drainage and awkward access for anything larger than a hand tool.
Properties on the bush fringe may run rainwater tanks, pumps and filtration, and some are not connected to mains sewer. That's different work to a standard sewered house.

Three things, in order. The first-flush diverter, which dumps the dirty initial runoff and is the single biggest factor in water quality — most people never clean theirs. The pump and its pressure switch, which fail with little warning and leave you with no water at all. And the tank's inlet screen, which keeps leaves and animals out. Filtration matters too, but it's downstream of getting those three right, and a neglected diverter makes the filter's job much harder.
