Why your blocked drain keeps coming back

Written by the Local Plumbing Patrol crew — from real Sydney jobs

Every week we meet Sydney homeowners who've had three different plumbers clear the same drain. Each visit fixed the problem for a while — but nobody ever told them why it kept blocking. If a line has gone twice, the blockage isn't the problem. It's the symptom.

What actually causes a repeat blockage

  • +Tree roots — the number one cause in Sydney's older suburbs. Roots find hairline gaps at pipe joints, then thicken season after season.
  • +Cracked or displaced pipes — earthenware sewers laid decades ago shift with ground movement, and every misaligned joint catches debris.
  • +Bellies and sags — a dip in the line holds water and solids instead of draining them, so the same spot silts up again and again.
  • +Grease and fat build-up — the usual culprit in kitchens and commercial kitchens especially, narrowing the pipe until anything catches.
  • +Foreign objects — wipes (including the 'flushable' ones), sanitary products and the occasional toy sitting at a joint, collecting everything behind them.

Why some drains are harder to clear than others

Access is the big one — a sewer with a boundary shaft in the front yard is straightforward, while a line that can only be reached from a roof vent takes longer and needs more gear. Severity matters too: grease and paper give way quickly, while established roots need mechanical cutting followed by jetting to clear the pipe wall properly. And a 2am overflow is always a harder job than a booked morning visit, which is why it pays to act on a slow drain before it becomes an emergency.

How to break the cycle

If the same line has blocked twice in a year, stop clearing blind and find the cause. Roots, cracked pipes and bellies don't heal themselves — a camera survey as part of our blocked drains service shows exactly what's happening underground, and the recorded footage turns a recurring mystery into an informed choice between patching, relining or replacing.

A good rule of thumb: clearing treats the symptom, diagnosis treats the asset. Knowing what your pipe actually looks like is what stops you clearing the same blockage every winter for the next decade.
