The 10-minute gas safety checklist every Sydney home should run

Gas is brilliantly safe when the installation is sound and quietly dangerous when it isn't. You don't need instruments for a basic audit — ten minutes and a keen nose cover the essentials.

The checklist

• +Cooktop flames should burn crisp and blue — persistent yellow or orange tips mean poor combustion and warrant a service.
• +Flexible appliance hoses shouldn't be cracked, kinked, or in contact with hot surfaces.
• +Bayonet fittings (heater connections) should click firmly and show no soot marks around them.
• +External appliance flues should be clear of cobwebs, nests and paint-overs.
• +Any appliance more than a decade old that's never been serviced is due.
• +Know where your meter valve is and check you can actually turn it.

If you smell gas

Turn the supply off at the meter, open doors and windows, don't touch light switches or naked flames, get everyone outside and call a licensed gas fitter from there. We treat suspected leaks as round-the-clock emergencies — no waiting until Monday.

One thing your checklist can't do is certify anything. In NSW, all gas work legally requires a licensed gas fitter and a compliance certificate — including 'simple' cooktop swaps.
